The traditional education system is failing us. Between a lack of resources, inadequate teaching and irrelevant curricula, student motivation to succeed in school is rightfully low.
In this article, we’re going to discuss why lazy students are NOT simply “bad students”, but rather victims of a failed system.
The reason so many students despise school is quite simply because school isn’t tailored towards their interests. Students are forced to memorize irrelevant content they can find with a Google search, and are rarely encouraged to pursue their actual passions.
TAKEAWAY
• School curricula as not individualized
• Grades do not guarantee success
• Being “lazy” does NOT necessarily mean someone is a “bum”
TRADITIONAL EDUCATION SYSTEM IS OUTDATED & FLAWED
Traditional education is not geared towards helping students hone their skills in an area they’re passionate about.
What it IS about is pumping out mindless sheep to follow along a path set for them without gaining any meaningful skills whatsoever.
The system needs to change with the times, especially in a world where online courses on sites like Udemy are becoming more valuable than traditional education.
I go much deeper into this topic in a separate article which you can check out here!
IRRELEVENT CONTENT
Who decided that literature should be a mandatory class for everyone?
Sure there’s a lot of great things to study from classic literature if that’s going to be relevant to your career.
But the fact of the matter is that most of the content we studied in school never ends up being relevant in our lives.
The most important thing to teach a young student is not the definition of some random biology term they’ll need to know in order to pass the final exam, but rather the importance of building a skillset and acquiring a love for the learning process.
GRADES ARE MEANINGLESS
What I’ve come to learn after all these years is that getting good grades was ONLY important if you planned to pursue a graduate level education(I.e medical school, law school, etc).
If college isn’t a path that is relevant to your goals in life, then don’t feel bad about taking another route.
They say most jobs prefer those with college degrees.
But the reality is whoever is the most skilled at a particular job, and can bring the most value (aka money) to a business, is the person who will get the job at the end of the day. Degree or no degree.
“LAZY” DOES NOT EQUAL BUM
The biggest misconception of all is that students who don’t care about school are “lazy bums”.
But how many stories do we hear of successful entrepreneurs, talented artists, genius programmers who received awful grades in school BECAUSE they were more focused on their dream?
Why do homework after school when you could be running your online side business instead?
Why get off your phone during class when you rather be researching ways to improve upon your skills to make more money?
Just because your time is not spent on homework and tests, does not mean it isn’t being well spent on something that could actually further your career.
CONCLUSION
People need to stop labeling students as “lazy” or “delinquents”– it isn’t that they aren’t capable – the education system is simply not tailored to them.
Counselors and teachers need to guide these young students who are often times seen as outcasts, and help them find what DOES excite them in life.
